SUMMARY:Italian American Veterans Museum presents screening of Heroes on Deck
DESCRIPTION:Italian American Veterans Museum presents screening of Heroes on Deck\nDuring World War II\, just off Chicago’s shoreline\, the US Navy trained over 15\,000 carrier pilots on two makeshift “flattops\,” both former\, coal-fired\, side wheel passenger steamers. \nNot every pilot landed successfully on the pitching decks of the USS Wolverine and USS Sable and many aircraft went to the Lake bottom. \nThe acclaimed PBS documentary “Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan“\, tells the story of the recovery of those rare warbirds and the ingenious training program that changed the course of the war in the Pacific. \nDoors will open at 2 p.m.\, and the film will be screened at 3.  Museum board member Joseph Troiani\, a retired Navy commander and consultant for the film\, will give a PowerPoint presentation and field questions before screening. \nAdmission is free\, but seating is extremely limited and reservations are a must. SUMMARY:IAVM Bird’s Eye View: Recollections of a WWII Recon Photographer
DESCRIPTION:A BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF WW II\n\nThe Italian American Veterans Museum is proud to present\nBird’s Eye View: Recollections of a WWII Recon Photographer\nAs told by Navy Veteran Ralph Triggiano\n1 p.m. • Sunday\, November 10\, 2019\nItalian American Veterans Museum\n3800 Division St.\, Stone Park\nWhile growing up in the Taylor Street neighborhood\, Ralph Triggiano dreamed of becoming a photographer. Along the way\, he captured vivid\, close-up images of life on deck and on shore\, as well as chilling long-range shots of Nagasaki after the atomic blast. \nNow 96\, Triggiano will be the guest of honor at the opening of an exhibition of his photographs on Nov. 10 at the Italian American Veterans Museum. Doors will open at noon\, and at 1 p.m.\, museum curator Steve Corbo will introduce Triggiano and engage him in a lively interview about his wartime experience. \nAdmission is free\, but seating is extremely limited and reservations are a must. Call 708-338-0690 and leave your name\, phone and the number of people in your party. \n \n
