Approximately 11,000 military women were stationed in Vietnam. Ninety percent of these women were nurses, while many others filled critical supporting roles. In addition to military women, an unknown number of civilian women served in Vietnam as members of the International Red Cross, United Service Organization (USO), and other humanitarian organizations. Most women served dangerously close to the front lines and, many others filled critical supporting roles, but all of them were volunteers.
